PVDC has excellent barrier properties as a packaging material, and using PVDC packaged food can greatly extend the shelf life, and at the same time, it has excellent protection for food color, aroma, and taste. PVDC composite packaging has lower unit resource consumption than ordinary PE film, paper, wood, aluminum foil and other packaging materials. The volume of packaging waste is greatly reduced, and the total cost is reduced, thus achieving the purpose of packaging reduction.

PVDCs in developed countries have a wide range of applications, covering food, chemicals, cosmetics, pharmaceuticals, and hardware machinery products, and are known as "green" packaging materials. The application of PVDC is related to the living standards of the people. At present, the annual consumption of PVDC in the Americas is about 50,000 tons, Europe 45,000 tons, and Asia and Australia a total of about 40,000 tons. The average annual growth rate of the PVDC market in Europe, America and Japan is 10%. In the Americas, PVDC resin used only for vacuum packaging of bulk fresh meat exceeds 15,000 tons per year, and coating consumption on PVDC paper accounts for 40% of total PVDC consumption. In Japan and South Korea, PVDC packaging materials are widely used in food, medicine, chemical products, and electronic product packaging materials, of which only PVDC resin is consumed by plastic wrap for more than 10,000 tons per year.

China's PVDC shrink film has just begun to enter the market, paper coating is also in its infancy, the main application areas focused on PVDC casing film, the annual consumption of 15,000 -2.0 million t. With the improvement of the people's living standards and the improvement of consumer and production company safety and environmental awareness, the consumption of PVDC flexible packaging market in China will grow at a high rate in the next 10 years.

Investment intensity increases resin import dependence is still high

The main suppliers of PVDC raw materials in China are Zhejiang Juhua Group Co., Ltd. and Zhejiang Dongyang Nofeng Plastics Co., Ltd. The PVDC latex products produced by these two companies have entered the international market. Many domestic enterprises have accelerated the investment in PVDC products. Many companies in Jiangsu, Zhejiang, and Shandong have introduced PVDC film or film production lines.

At present, the total capacity of China's PVDC emulsion coating device has reached 6500-7000t/a, mainly used for tobacco film (more than 70% of the total) and a small amount of food and drug packaging. China's PVDC latex production technology has matured, and the latex produced has a strong market competitiveness, but the PVDC resin production technology still needs to be further improved. With the rapid development of China's economy, the market's demand for PVDC products has increased substantially. In 1995, the import volume of PVDC products in China was only 1,120 tons, and in 2005 it had reached 25,000 tons, of which PVDC resin accounted for more than 90% of the total import volume.
