Scientists at a U.S. university have synthesized a biodegradable plastic that inhibits the growth of bacteria.
Researchers from the University of New Jersey in the United States have used a natural antibacterial agent extracted from cloves, oregano, thyme and chilli powder to synthesize polymers to prevent bacteria from forming on food and packaging surfaces.
According to Ashley Carbone, a researcher at the University, the natural product polymer can be biodegraded by virtue of its own unique chemical composition and combination. In the presence of water or enzymes, biodegradation can be carried out and slow release of active bactericidal components, which will more effectively protect the food and prolong the food maintenance period.
