In 2003, KBA started to develop a multi-functional drying device inside the mechanism including infrared / hot air (IR / TA) and UV drying devices. Now we can provide a complete plan for the Rapida 105 of medium format, and intend to extend this plan to all of our Rapida models. But why should we provide our own drying system at the same time as we provide products from already mature suppliers? Issue 4 "KBA Process" provides you with some answers.
In addition to ensuring that all systems work as announced, the development of this new drying module focuses attention on two main goals: to maximize flexibility for the benefit of users, such as ensuring UV radiators The module can be plugged in any position, and is easy to operate with a console display and controller that provides all key parameters.
Infrared / hot air dryer
Rapida 105's double lengthened paper take-up device can accommodate up to 18 infrared and hot air drying modules in a 7:11 ratio. These modules can be arbitrarily arranged in the drying section according to the production requirements, providing maximum flexibility in how the printed sheets are dried. When performing double-sided printing or full-page copy printing, the optimized hot air knife dries the varnish with the maximum air volume that can be achieved, so that the production speed does not have to be reduced.

The infrared radiators conventionally used in the VariDry system are Heraeus dual-tube carbon infrared (CIR) radiators with an intensity of 60 W / cm (152 W / inch). The spectrum of a CIR radiator is considered to be closer to the absorption curve of water than other short-wave (SIR) or fast medium-wave (FMIR) radiators (see chart). Therefore, CIR radiators can work more efficiently at very low temperatures.
The infrared module and hot air knife can be removed from the slide-in port without tools, which makes maintenance and repair work faster and easier. If you need to replace an infrared radiator, simply remove the two screws and pull the radiator out of the module to remove it from the printing press. The plug-in connection means that anyone can replace it without special knowledge. Some special applications can use fast medium-wave dual-tube radiators or compound radiators (double-tube radiators, one of which is carbon and one is short-wave). The operation of the paper can be monitored at any time through the rising part of the paper collecting device and the window in the elongated paper collecting device. The intensity of the infrared radiator is adjusted by measuring the temperature of the paper stack and adjusting the temperature of the radiator accordingly. In order to facilitate monitoring, the relevant parameters are displayed on the console.
UV drying device
The UV module used in the drying unit between the unit and the end of the printing machine is the same size as the IR / TA module, so it can also be placed freely in the printing machine. The standard module has a strength of 160 watts / cm (406 watts / inch), and other power levels are available on request. The module is equipped with a dichroic mirror, which reflects all UV radiation while absorbing most of the heat. These easily replaceable mirrors have a reflective surface over 70 layers thick, which maximizes UV radiation and dissipates heat to the maximum through the cooling system of the dryer.
UV lamps can be replaced as quickly and easily as our IR / TA radiators, and no special knowledge is required here. A compact media plug contains all relevant connectors, so there is no need to disconnect and reconnect cables. The media plug contains a high-voltage connection for module selection control, interrogation signals and control voltage for shutter positioning, module identification for printing press control (such as recorded hours of operation independent of the module's position in the printing press), and water cooling. If a UV module is removed from a connection port, the media trunk connector can be inserted into a dedicated parking socket so that there will no longer be loose loose cables there. The UV module can be replaced safely and unhindered in less than 60 seconds.
Transformers or electronic ballasts are used to select UV radiators. They keep the power setting in the static mode very low (transformer: below 20%; ballast: below 10%), which means huge energy savings. And if a ballast is used, the electrical cabinet of the drying device can be smaller than the electrical cabinet required by the transformer. Currently we are actively working to find additional methods and means to optimize the power of the radiators, extend their service life and reduce energy consumption. For example, it should be possible to turn off the UV lamp between printed sheets in the future. This can reduce energy consumption by up to 30%, depending on the size of the paper.
UV lamps doped with iron and gallium are available, which can achieve maximum efficiency in the curing of inks and opaque white coatings. Installing the Wash Tronic system can also save a lot of time, because it is not necessary to shut them down when performing cleaning work.
New dryer
The new complete dryer will further increase the great flexibility provided by our VariDry system. A single IR / TA and UV module has started to be used in conjunction with the quick-change device. The infrared module with three radiators in these components can be replaced with a UV module. Since the method of adding a UV drying device between units can be used to increase the drying components in the drying device, the production options are virtually unlimited.
The drying device (1) is connected with a centralized water cooling system (2), and the water cooling system is also connected with the air compression cabinet (3) and the multifunctional cooling device (4). An external heat exchanger (condenser) (5) provides cooling input. A pumping and control cabinet (6) is only used in abnormal environments
As an optional device, or in those presses that are not yet available for VariDry, we will continue to provide products from other manufacturers (such as Grafix, IST Metz, etc.) that you are familiar with and verified.
