The first student-designed tool was 3D printed on the space station

It seems that 3D printing technology really has to take off in space. Earlier this week, Made in Space announced that its AMF 3D printer installed on the International Space Station successfully printed the first tool in space. Today, a fortunate student, the winner of the Future Engineers Design Challenge, is able to chat with astronauts in space, and the latter will print his award-winning tool design in 3D .

Last year, RJHillan, a high school student in Alabama, won the first space tool challenge held by Future Engineers, which required young people to innovate and design a tool that could be used both in 3D and in space. The winner of the challenge was designed to print out on a 3D printer on the space station. Just yesterday, the lucky Hillan introduced his innovative tool design to NASA's two astronauts Tim Kopra and Jeff Williams.

Hillan didn't just talk to the astronauts, but he also saw that his own tools floated around the astronauts under zero gravity. He said excitedly: "This feeling is great, it is really incredible. This is the feeling I have never experienced before."

Hillan's award-winning work is a functional mechanical tool with a number of distinctive features. The most impressive aspect of this compact rectangular tool is its well-designed details, such as a small notch on the Velcro (the astronaut can use it to hold the object in place). This tool has now been printed in 3D, although it is made of plastic, but astronauts say it is very useful.

What's more, it's worth mentioning that this is the first time that Hillan designed it using 3D design software. But this creative young man is familiar with the needs of space explorers, who have allegedly participated in the Space Camp project seven times – a five-day event, mainly for children. We introduce space exploration and related technologies.

Currently, Future Engineers is working on the “Think Outside the Box” challenge, which requires students under K-12 (equivalent to our third year) to design a 3D printed scalable object for aerospace Members use it in space. The submission of the challenge is due until August 1.
