“In commercial applications involving 2 to 4 mils (thousandths of an inch) thick polyethylene film, the curved die allows manufacturers to increase the extrusion rate by 30%, while the thickness consistency can be maintained at +/- 1.3%,” Curtin said. “It starts production of a standard saleable product in five minutes and produces only 90 kilograms of waste, while the traditional die requires 20 minutes of start-up time and produces 270 kilograms of waste.” In contrast to the previous constant deflection die, the superb flow of the curved die is particularly valuable for the processing of die heads for thermally sensitive polymers, but for most resins, it improves the reliability of product quality. It also reduces the possibility of lip lip buildup and gelation.
